SPM 2014: 11,289 students score straight As
BY - 3 MARCH 2015 @ 9:42 AM
PUTRAJAYA: A total of 11,289 students scored straight As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
Education Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said there was a slight dip in the number of students who scored all As.
"For 2013, a total of 13,970 students scored straight As. Even though there is a slight decrease, the gap is still small," he told reporters during the announcement of the SPM results this morning.
Khair said one of the factors of the decrease in straight As scorers could be attributed to the new examination format.
He also said the national average grade (GPN) for 2014 was 5.08 and there was a decrease of 0.15 points as compared to 2013 (4.93).
The GPN measures a student's overall performance in the examination, and a lower score indicates a better student achievement.
A total of 455,839 students had sat for the examination which took place at 3,655 examinations last year.
The SPM examination took place from Nov 3 to Dec 3, 2014.

US police shoot dead boy carrying pellet gun
CLEVELAND,US-A 12-year-old boy shot by police after apparently grabbing what turned out to be a pellet gun died from his wounds on Sunday.
Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said on Sunday that one officer fired twice after the boy pulled the weapon - which was lacking the orange safety indicator usually found on the muzzle - from his waistband but had not pointed it at police.
The boy did not make any verbal threats but grabbed the replica handgun after being told to raise his hands, Tomba said. "That's when the officer fired," he said.
On the other occasion in Ferguson, protests are taking place once again in the US town of St Louis to draw attention to the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager.
Michael Brown was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson in August.
Digging out the dead in eastern Ukraine
Paul Brennan,al jazeera
As the fighting seems to be ending in east Ukraine and the frontlines fall silent, the grim job of tracing all those killed or missing in the fighting is only just beginning.
Thousands on both sides have been killed in battles such as at Donetsk airport, Debaltseve, and Ilovaisk. But the numbers of corpses retrieved and returned to their bereaved relatives is much smaller.
In the chaos of the conflict, neither side has definitive figures for the numbers "missing in action".
Some soldiers may have just deserted, but many of those killed were simply left where they fell.
At Donetsk airport, nearly four months of bitter fighting has left the whole complex completely shattered.
Separatist commanders have press-ganged captured Ukrainian soldiers into excavating the bodies of their dead colleagues.
But there are growing calls for a more humane and effective way of resolving the fate of those who went to fight and never came back.
